I've been trying really hard to get some gigs round my area, and have had no luck whatsoever. Basically I just need some advice on what I can do, as I'm getting a bit sick of just playing to my four walls... I've got a demo that I'm proud of (and have had a lot of positive feedback on), I've offered to play for free just to get my name out there, and no joy really. One place that did look promising was a local bar, but they didn't have the necessary copyright license for DJs, as it wasn't cost-effective (they normally just have music channels on a big screen TV). There doesn't even really seem to be anywhere to start a night or anything like that. Any ideas what I can do? Same situation here mate, tried the own night thing and that went down the pan, trying again, not looking good at mo, can't find anywhere to play or anyone who plays our music in a club that's willing to take on new djs! Grrrrr. It's just too damn hard to get started. If anyone does have an idea, I'd like to know too, been djing for nearly 8-9 years now! Unfortunately there isn't really any kind of market, especially on a weekend when everyone just wants to get pissed and listen to the top 40. The bar wasn't ideal I must say. I had kinda got into the whole "anywhere will do" mentality. It is really just a case of finding the right venue I think, but as you say, no market, no right venue. Am gonna have to start looking slightly further afield I think... The journey's gonna be long, gotta keep ya head down, gotta be strong...

I had a look at the list of tunes you're playing at the moment and there's some corkers on there (I'll try and get a listen to your mix this week too), but the harsh truth is that straight-up prog nights, outside of the bars and clubnights promoted on boards like Hooj/GU/Bedrock are virtually non-existent. ...unfortunately I think the whole bar-DJ thing is pretty much a city phenomenon, I'm lucky enough to have had a bar residency for about 6 years now in North London and it's a great little outlet for me to 'vent' once a month, but I tried to get a similar thing going up North (where I'm originally from) in the past with little success. Another thing to bear in mind... a bar residency isn't like a club one, you have to remember the music isn't the focal thing it is in a nightclub, you don't always get to play what you want to play (I regularly turn up with a batch of new tunes, and realise at the end of the night I've hardly played any of them!)... you can have unenthusiastic/totally disinterested/fvcking obnoxious p1ssed punters to deal with and... shock horror!, it can be pretty hard work!! Anyway, sorry if I sound too negative, keep dishing out the CD's and maybe look a bit further afield... if you're passionate enough about what you do, something will come your way.

Posts: 936 (02/17/04 05:56:27) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	In the meantime while you are setting up your superstar career I would still go for the local bar, Its probably one of those red-neck-tv-bars but still, you get some "deck-time", you get to know alot of people(who in their turn knows alot of people)practice and knowledge what music actually does to people( there are DJs who can play at clubs all their life but dont get it), and how to avoid trouble.. ......so here's some tricks I tend to use when playing the countryside(in Sweden that is, wich means your top 40 is "underground"...but its loads of fun) 1. Learn how to fight. 2. If not 1, learn how to talk yourself out of trouble..... 3. If its possible bring a crew, both for good feeling and protection. 4. Never take a request,Then you have turned into the local "jukebox" 5. Play a top40/oldie/recogniseble tune(but not "tooo" obvious, people tend to enjoy the unexpected, specially old tunes), when your "loosing" the audience, or use 5+1 tequniqe(5 songs you like 1 song that gets the party going) 6.Always get to know the staff, they will be the key to a good time! And I assure you, whatever happens you will have a ell of a laugh......learn to know alot of people, hopefully get some money, and ......whatever else.... J

I hate bars that play prog - it's wrong. And don't play it too loud!
